Documentation Specialist Employee Spotlight: Meet Christa

by Jessica February 13 2018 08:58
180 medical documentation specialist employee spotlight

As one of the leading suppliers in America for intermittent catheters and ostomy products, 180 Medical makes it a goal to seek out and hire people who truly have a compassionate heart and want to help others. If you're seeking a career where you can actually enjoy going to work, and you want to be rewarded and fulfilled by what you do, day in and day out, you should consider applying for one of our available jobs.

What are just a few of the reasons to work at 180 Medical? We offer a competitive benefits package, extensive training and opportunity for growth within the company, and many fun extras and perks. We were also named one of the Best Places to Work in Oklahoma for the 8th year in 2017.

Now, we want to introduce you to one of our employees who has been with us for two years now. Today, meet Christa, one of our team of awesome Documentation Specialists.

What are some of your daily tasks as a Documentation Specialist here?

When we receive over new referrals from a facility or when a customer is ready to start getting their orders through 180 Medical, we want to do our part in assisting the customer by making sure their insurance will cover their required medical supplies. Often, I'm the first person to contact them to confirm their insurance information before getting their coverage verified.

Because the products we supply usually require a prescription, I'm also responsible for making sure we have a good prescription on file from their doctor. I also make sure we have all of the proper documentation that we might need, such as additional progress notes, depending on the customer's insurance requirements.

What is the best part of working at 180 Medical for you?

Well, in a lot of ways, it helped me step outside of my comfort zone. Before 180 Medical, I have mostly worked at small companies with less than 10 people. This was a nice change.

But more than anything else, getting to help people on a daily basis is the most rewarding thing. I also love my co-workers, and I feel that I have made some great friends.

Our quarterly meetings are always fun, and I also love that we have opportunities for other fun activities. My family and I had a blast at the Family Movie Night last summer, and we also really enjoyed getting to participate in the annual MS Walk.

Tell us a little bit more about life outside of work. What do you love to do in your downtime?

180 medical employee christaSomething fun people might not know about me is that I really enjoy refinishing old furniture that has been passed down in my family. I make wooden signs with quotes by hand too. Lately, I've been coloring almost every night. It's very relaxing!

I've been married for 12 years! We have a daughter who is almost 15 and a son who is almost 11 now. We love doing anything outdoors together, whether that's going camping, going to the lake and spending time at our lake house, or just playing catch in the backyard. It doesn't matter what we're doing; we just love being together outside!

What's something special on your bucket list?

I only had one thing on my bucket list, and I got to cross that off when I finally saw Garth Brooks live in concert! Now, I'm trying to figure out what else to put on it. I've always wanted to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show live.

What's an accomplishment that you're most proud of at 180 Medical?

Being awarded as one of the Top Team Performers recently at a quarterly meeting!

What's a quote that keeps you inspired?
"Love is forgiveness." This is also the tattoo I have on my arm.

And lastly, what advice would you give to someone who might be considering applying for a job with 180 Medical?

Do it!! Not only are you helping people be able to live their daily lives, but I have never worked with a better company.

Christa, thank you so much for taking time to talk. We're so grateful for you and the awesome team of Documentation Specialists here at 180 Medical.

Customer Specialist Employee Spotlight: Meet Sarah

by Jessica January 5 2018 06:42
sarah 180 medical customer service employee

180 Medical is a national supplier of intermittent catheters, ostomy products, and related medical supplies. We make it a point to hire positive, compassionate, hard-working individuals who want to enjoy going to work, not only for a paycheck but for a rewarding place where we can make a difference. 180 Medical offers a competitive benefits package, extensive training, and many fun extras and perks. We were also named one of the Best Places to Work in Oklahoma for the 8th year in 2017.

We're excited to introduce you to Sarah, who works as a part of our great team of trained, friendly Customer Specialists.

Sarah, you've been with 180 Medical now for over 3 years, and we're so glad that you're a part of the 180 family. What are some of your responsibilities as a Customer Specialist?

Thank you! I get to directly speak to our customers and manage their accounts. The tasks that Customer Specialist typically handle can range from updating orders, adjusting account information, setting up new accounts, relaying and interpreting insurance information, helping them with various questions, and finding the right product for each person's individual needs. There's always new information to learn in this position as our department evolves!

180 Medical really does a great job in helping you find your niche. A while after becoming a Customer Specialist, I expressed interest in assisting with training. Since then, I've been provided with several opportunities to teach and train new hires. Helping my fellow coworkers learn and get to succeed is extremely gratifying.

What do you love most about working in your position at 180 Medical?

customer specialists holiday photo boothMy favorite thing is getting to encourage any customers who may be going through a difficult time or dealing with hard health issues. I like to be the listening ear that they may really need. Getting to know you have made even a small difference in their life or their experience never gets old for me.

One particular situation I recall is setting up a new female customer who was a Nurse Practitioner and brand new to self-cathing. She told me that she had helped her patients cath, but she never dreamed that she would have to do this herself. At first, she was very discouraged by her diagnosis, but after a long, heartfelt conversation, I assured her that we would make sure that the process was as easy as possible for her and send her a product that would fit well with her lifestyle and individual needs. She ended up sending a very sweet note thanking us for the encouragement, and even though she was able to eventually stop using intermittent catheters, she was very grateful for us during that time. These interactions are truly rewarding.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I'm a fitness enthusiast, and I enjoy cycling, running, and weight lifting. I love spending time with my friends and family, especially my husband Robbie and our lab-mix Rowdy. On the weekends, you might catch me on a local bike trail or serving on my church's production team by running a camera or helping with graphics.

bicyclist on trails

What's one of the top things on your bucket list?

It's hard to pick just one, but my husband is trying to talk me into skydiving...We'll see!

What quote keeps your inspired in your day-to-day life?

"Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility, count others more significant than yourselves." Philippians 2:3

And lastly, what advice would you give to someone who might be considering applying for a job with 180 Medical?

Compassion is key. If you love people and enjoy helping others, then this job is right up your alley!

Sarah, thank you so much for taking time out of your day to answer these questions! We're so proud of you and the rest of awesome Customer Specialists, who work hard and take such good care of our customers with unparalleled service.

by Jessica October 4 2017 05:59
For the 8th year, 180 Medical was once again named one of the Best Places to Work in Oklahoma in 2017. We're not only proud but also incredibly honored to find out at the recent Best Places to Work banquet that we were ranked 7th among large employers in the state.

180 medical best places to work 2017

The Best Places to Work awards were created by the Oklahoma-based publication, The Journal Record, in combination with the Best Companies Group in order to honor and recognize the Oklahoma businesses that go above and beyond. Many industries were included in the deliberation, including finance, healthcare, information technology, manufacturing, non-profit, and more.

In a detailed process of collection of data from the many entrants and analyzing anonymous feedback from employees in surveys, the awards are given based on the workplaces which clearly exhibit the most satisfied employees and the best practices to create a positive, safe culture.

"The real honor in this ranking is that it is based directly on feedback from our own employees. To rank so highly among the many workplaces in Oklahoma is a testament of just how awesome 180 Medical is," says Angie Christopher, HR Director at 180 Medical. "We truly care about making 180 Medical a place where people with big hearts and a good work ethic can enrich their careers and lives."

180 Medical Honors Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month

by Jessica September 20 2017 06:00
September is dedicated to raising awareness about spinal cord injuries (SCI). This is an especially important time to 180 Medical, since our founder lives with a spinal cord injury, as well as many of our customers, who we consider a part of the 180 family!

spinal cord injury awareness month 2017

What Is Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month?

Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month is a time to spread awareness about spinal cord injuries, the potential risk factors, and safety precautions that can be taken to reduce the number of injuries in the future. At the same time, it's incredibly important to acknowledge the many living with spinal cord injuries in the world today and pay tribute to their bravery and perseverance.

According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center, here are some of the most recent facts about spinal cord injuries:
spinal cord injury awareness fact 1
Around 285,000 people are living with spinal cord injuries in the United States.

spinal cord injury fact 2
About 17,500 new spinal cord injury cases occur in the United States every year.

spinal cord injury fact 3
Males account for about 81% of new spinal cord injury cases.

spinal cord injury fact 4
The leading causes of spinal cord injuries are vehicle crashes, followed by falls, acts of violence, and sports.

The effects of spinal cord injuries are often life-altering, but even so, those affected can live normal, healthy lives after rehabilitation. Many people with spinal cord injuries go on to achieve things many thought impossible or use their experience to help positively impact others' lives, like Mason Ellis, Jen Goodwin, and Tricia Downing, just to name a few.

todd brown founder of 180 medicalOur company's founder, Todd Brown, is also a wonderful example of this, and of course, his experience makes the cause of Spinal Cord Injury Awareness very dear to our hearts here at 180 Medical.

After being paralyzed from the chest down in a motocross accident, Todd discovered first-hand what it was like to readjust to the world navigating in a wheelchair. He dealt with urinary tract infections while reusing catheters and also had the unfortunate experience of finding out that there weren't many companies out there with employees who truly seemed to care or have much knowledge about his condition or the products he needed.

That experience is what led him to create 180 Medical in order to help others living with spinal cord injuries and other conditions that require the use of catheters, related urologic supplies, and ostomy products, in the hope that he could help turn their lives around.

180 Medical Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day

To honor Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month as well as raise awareness, 180 Medical is planning a company SCI Day at our Oklahoma City headquarters on September 27th for the second year. We'll have some fun opportunities for our employees to get involved, such as a pizza fundraiser, wearing green for awareness, and more!

180 medical sci awareness day 2016

At 180 Medical, we truly care about raising awareness about spinal cord injuries just as much as we care about every single one of our customers. We see firsthand how much this type of injury can impact and change lives.

sci connectionThanks to new research into spinal cord injuries, technology continues to advance in order to make everyday life more adaptable for those living with spinal cord injuries, including products such as closed system catheters, which provide an easier and more hygienic way to self-cath for many.

We make it a point to do what we can to support spinal cord injury groups, including our SCI Day Pizza Fundraiser, and we participate in community events when we can, such as the recent INTEGRIS Jim Thorpe Rehab Courage Run and the annual Corporate Challenge, which goes to support disabled athletes in the Endeavor Games.

If you or a loved one are newly injured and looking for a catheter supplier who will offer you compassion and understanding, we're here for you!

Urology Territory Specialist Employee Spotlight: Meet Wendy

180 Medical is a national supplier of intermittent catheters, ostomy products, and related medical supplies. We make it a point to hire positive, compassionate, hard-working individuals who want to enjoy going to work, not only for a paycheck but for a rewarding place where we can make a difference. 180 Medical offers a competitive benefits package, extensive training, and many fun extras and perks. We were also named one of the Best Places to Work in Oklahoma for the 7th year in 2016.

We're excited to feature Wendy, one of our Executive Urology Territory Specialists, in this month's employee spotlight.

Wendy, congratulations on recently celebrating your 7th anniversary with 180 Medical! Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Twenty years ago, I moved from Florida to Colorado without a job and not knowing anyone because I love the great outdoors, and there is so much to do here. In the summer, I do a lot of hiking, camping, biking, and golfing. I have hiked five 14-ers. I also love live music and attend a lot of outdoor concerts in the summer. During the winter, I ski and snowshoe.

180 medical employee sales rep

What is a typical day in the life for you as a territory specialist (sales representative)?
My day starts early with emails and phone calls if I am working locally, and it starts even earlier if I have a lot of drive time to the area that I am working in. Due to the size of my territory that I cover, I have a lot of time between the wheel, but I'm always making calls to nurses along the way to answer questions and collect documentation such as prescriptions and Medicare documentation. The position requires a lot of multi-tasking, but my main responsibility is to call on any facilities in my territory that may have patients who will need to use intermittent catheters. I also like to make sure that all of my facilities are stocked with sample bags so that they have what they need when they teach a patient how to catheterize

wendy l spina bifida walk n roll coloradoWhat are some of the best parts of your job?
The best part about working for 180 Medical is that we are the absolute best in the industry! We employ the most caring, knowledgeable specialists who truly go above and beyond for our customers every day, and this makes my job much easier. I can feel confident knowing that the patients our facilities send to 180 Medical for their supplies will be taken care of quickly with kindness and respect. The best part about being a territory specialist is that we get to make our own schedules, and I also enjoy getting to know the nurses and doctors and build relationships with them.

What sets 180 Medical apart from other employers, in your opinion?
180 Medical is just a rare gem that knows how to treat their employees as well as their customers. We have the most incredible company culture that I have ever experienced. Although I had been in sales for 10 years prior to 180 Medical, I had never worked for a company that gave their reps as much autonomy to run their business as 180 Medical does. One thing that working here has given me is the opportunity to learn discipline in managing my territory, such as scheduling, routing, and responding to the volume of emailed requests.

The longer I've been with 180 Medical, and the more the company has grown over the years, I've had some fun opportunities to ride along with and train more territory specialists to help them get their business going. I really enjoy training other reps and sharing my experience and knowledge with them, and 180 Medical has been a big part of allowing me to explore those strengths.

If you're interested in a sales job with 180 Medical and if you work hard and are smart, persistent, self-motivated, and driven, you will grow your territory and can be very successful!

wendy 180 medical employee testimonial

What's something about you that people might be surprised to know?
I’m a bit of an adrenaline junky, and I’m definitely the most adventuresome person in my family. I love trying new outdoor activities. I have been skydiving and fly-boarding a few times and have been a certified scuba diver since 1996.

What is one of your favorite 180 Medical memories?
My first favorite memory of 180 Medical is meeting Todd Brown (founder of 180 Medical) on my flight when I was working as a flight attendant. I will be forever grateful that I met him that day and that he gave me his card and the opportunity to interview. My second favorite memory is receiving the company coin, which was such an honor to me.

wendy l company coin 180 medical

What are some fun community events you like to make time for outside of work?
I love getting the chance to attend as many charitable events in the community as I can.  A few of the major annual events I attend are the Spina Bifida Association Walk-N-Roll, Spina Bifida Association Education Days, Adaptive Adventures, Jam the Damz, Camp Discovery, and several other adaptive programs for kids and adults with disabilities.  I also attend Boys Hope Girls Hope every year.

Wendy, thank you so much for taking the time to answer these questions! We truly appreciate you for all the hard work you put in, day in and day out, and all the compassion you show for not only our customers but for the doctors and nurses with whom you interact regularly to make sure we take care of their patients properly and compassionately. You display the 180 Way in all you do, and we're thankful for you and all of the hardworking Urology Territory Specialists every day!

We're happy to feature Jacob from our Confirmations Department in this month's employee spotlight.

jacob confirmations 180 medical employee spotlight

Jacob, tell us a little bit about yourself.
I was in the military for 4 years, mainly stationed out of Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX. I was a (68W) combat medic. In my spare time, I love to go fishing and camping, and one of my favorite hobbies is to watch and play sports. I was born and raised in Oklahoma, and I have to watch the Oklahoma Sooners play every year. Some day, I'd like to start my own business.

What are some of your main duties as a Confirmations Specialist?
My day revolves around confirming regular orders for our customers to make sure they receive their much-needed supplies in the amounts and quantities they need. We call about 7 to 10 days before their regularly scheduled order just to make sure they are ready. This is done to make sure we follow and meet insurance requirements, and it also ensures that our customers get the right amount for their needs every time.

jacob 180 medical employeeWhat's one of your favorite memories at 180 Medical so far?
My favorite memory here was the first time I saw an example of just how much of a positive impact we have the opportunity to make in people's lives here. Close to the time I started working here, I spoke with a customer who was going through a really difficult time, and together, we looked at a few different options on his account that helped to alleviate some of his burdens. About a month or so later, I heard that he had called back in to let us know how much he appreciated everything that I did for him. That's when I realized that we really do make a difference every day we come in to work, and that's a priceless feeling.

If you knew someone who was considering applying for a job at 180 Medical, what advice would you give them?
Do it! You won't regret it. 180 Medical really is a great place to work. There is so much opportunity for growth and development. It's very hard to become complacent because you learn something new every day, and everyone around you wants to see you succeed. We are a team, and it takes effort from everyone on our team to complete our mission.

Do you have a favorite quote that keeps you inspired?
"The true measure of a man is not how he behaves in moments of comfort and convenience, but how he stands at times of controversy and challenges." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Thank you, Jacob, and all of our awesome employees in the Confirmations Department. We appreciate the effort and compassion that you display every day in your work and handling our customers like our own family members. You truly do make a difference!

There are opportunities to connect with others at charitable events like the Spina Bifida Association's Walk-N-Rolls or Bowl-a-thons, runs for Prostate Cancer, volunteering at food banks or helping with Habitat for Humanity, and we also offer an annual option around Christmas to purchase gifts for children in need.

180 Medical Named One of the Best Places to Work for 7th Year

by Jessica August 16 2016 10:24
We here at 180 Medical are proud to once again be selected as one of the Best Places to Work in Oklahoma by okcBiz Magazine. This is the seventh year we have been awarded this prestigious title, and we're so happy to be named one of the top employers in the metro as well as the entire state of Oklahoma.

“Best Places to Work in Oklahoma” is awarded by the Best Companies Group after researching each workplace entered in the competition and its business practices, demographics, and philosophy. The second part consists of an in-depth survey where employees have an opportunity to anonymously share their feedback of what it's really like in their workplace in their own experience. Through this process, the Best Companies Group looks over all information given and determines the final rankings for the companies with the happiest employees and the best work culture.

"We are truly honored and humbled to earn this award," says Director of Human Resources, Sharon Hodnett. "It's great to know that our employees continue to give positive feedback about working at 180 Medical. Such a big part of the great culture is the passion and teamwork that everyone exhibits here on a daily basis, and that's what makes it fun to come to work here every day."

180 Medical's Annual Biggest Loser Competition is Underway

by Jessica February 17 2016 08:26
The turn of the new year is when many people make resolutions to achieve their personal goals, and weight loss is often on those lists of resolutions. So each year, 180 Medical hosts a weight-loss competition for any employee who wants to join in and take part. It's a fun and positive way to encourage employees to stay healthy and get fit. We've got a great participation this year with 63 people competing for the title of 180's "Biggest Loser," which will be determined by the total percentage of weight lost over 8 weeks. Our last weigh-in is just under a month away now, so the heat is on!

It's exciting to see everyone work to support each other by sharing healthy recipes, holding each other accountable on daily workouts, and encouraging the group. Every day, our on-site workout facility is staying full of our employees who are committing to a healthy lifestyle.

Once the competition is over, no matter who the winner...or "biggest loser"...is, it won't be hard for everyone to keep up that hard-earned weight loss year round at 180 Medical, voted one of the Best Places to Work in Oklahoma for multiple years, with an on-site gym (complete with cardio machines, weight machines, and free weights) and healthy snacks like fresh fruit and raw almonds stocked in our office break rooms.

This annual competition is just one of the fun things we get to do at 180 Medical. Interested in having a job you love? Check out available careers at 180 Medical.
