What is the GentleCath Air™ Catheter for Women

The GentleCath Air™ for Women is a single-use hydrophilic intermittent catheter in a recyclable, resealable case. Convatec developed it with input from women who use catheters and want comfort, easy handling, a discreet product, and simple disposal.

At six inches long, the catheter comes in a compact AirCase™ that can fit easily into a pocket, purse, makeup bag, or travel kit. It’s pre-hydrated and ready to use right out of the case, and its extended funnel provides room for hygienic handling.

After you’re finished catheterizing, the cap reattaches securely so the used catheter can be carried discreetly until there’s a convenient, private place to throw it away.

How to Use the New GentleCath Air™ for Women Catheter

Convatec’s GentleCath Air™ for Women comes pre-hydrated and ready to use, so there’s no coating to activate and no additional lubricant needed.

Follow the instructions provided by your healthcare professional and read the manufacturer’s instructions before using the catheter for the first time. 180 Medical also provides videos for learning to use this and other female hydrophilic catheters at HowToCath.com.

Step 1. Wash and dry your hands well. Set the GentleCath Air™ and any other catheterization supplies you may use within easy reach on your lap or a clean, dry surface.

Step 2. Sit on or stand over the toilet, depending on the position that works best for you. If you use antiseptic swabs or BZK wipes, clean around the urethral opening before beginning.

Step 3. Remove the catheter from its case. It’s ready to use as soon as you open it. Hold the catheter by the funnel to avoid touching the catheter tube. If you’re still learning where to insert a female catheter, a catheterization mirror may make the urethral opening easier to locate.

Step 4. Gently insert the catheter tip into the urethra until urine begins to flow out the funnel end toward the toilet. If you feel resistance as you insert, pause and take a deep breath to help your muscles relax. Then try again. Never force the catheter.

Step 5.  Once urine begins to flow, gently advance the catheter another inch if possible. Allow your bladder to empty completely.

Step 6. When urine stops flowing, you can slowly begin to remove the catheter. Place the used catheter back inside its discreet case and securely reattach the cap. If a trash can isn’t available, the sealed case makes it easy to carry the catheter discreetly until you can dispose of it properly.
