Does Medicare cover closed system catheters?
In most cases, Medicare covers uncoated straight catheters or coudé tip catheters with sterile lubricating jelly, although in certain cases, some individuals may qualify to receive closed system catheters in specific cases.
For example, if you get urinary tract infections (UTIs) while practicing sterile-use catheterization (using a new catheter and a lubricating jelly packet each time you cath), you may be eligible to receive closed system catheters through Medicare if the UTIs are documented with your doctor.
Additionally, people with documented spinal cord injuries (SCI) may qualify for closed system catheter coverage through Medicare based on their individual needs and documentation.
