How do I help my child learn to use catheters?

child learning to cathWhen your child is ready to take over their own catheterization routine and learn to use catheters on their own, it can be challenging. However, plenty of kids use catheters every day.

In addition to our step-by-step pediatric catheterization instructions at, here are a few more helpful tips:

  • Support your child and communicate honestly about using catheters
  • Emphasize how important catheterization is for their health, especially if they have a Mitrofanoff procedure or a neobladder, which must be catheterized as often as your child’s doctor prescribes to avoid severe damage or infection
  • Set reminders on a watch, clock, or phone so they learn to follow their doctor’s prescribed catheterization schedule
